Mr. Awedda Robert Kotchani, Regional Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for West Africa, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to explore areas of collaboration aimed at advancing human rights in Ghana.
Welcoming the delegation on behalf of the Minister, Mr. Ebenezer Charway, Director of the General Administration Directorate, expressed appreciation for OHCHR’s continued support and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening partnerships to promote the rights and welfare of women, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Mr. Kotchani, who was in Ghana to participate in a high-level consultative conference on the implementation of the landmark UN Resolution A/Res/80/250 on the transatlantic slave trade, commended the Ministry for its efforts in coordinating Ghana’s reporting obligations to international human rights treaty bodies.
He also reiterated OHCHR’s readiness to support advocacy efforts towards the ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography, in line with Ghana’s UDHR75 pledge.
Discussions centred on strengthening human rights mechanisms, supporting follow-up actions on recommendations from international human rights bodies, building staff capacity, advancing child protection and gender equality initiatives, and enhancing collaboration with other UN agencies to support the Ministry’s mandate.
Both parties expressed their commitment to maintaining close collaboration and regular engagement to advance the protection and promotion of the rights of vulnerable populations in Ghana.
