UNICEF-GHANA DONATES PPEs AND OTHER ITEMS TO THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Ghana on Friday, 22nd May, 2020 donated some Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Department of Social Welfare through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection for onward distribution to some Residential homes, Remand and Correctional centres and Professional social workers working with the Department of Social Welfare and the Head of Local Government Service.
The Chief Director for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Afisah Zakariah in her opening statement was grateful to UNICEF-Ghana’s kind gesture towards the vulnerable.
The UNICEF representative in Ghana, Madam Anne- Claire Dufay congratulated the Government of Ghana for its relentless effort to curtail the spread of the Corona Virus and also protect the most vulnerable and families in the country.
She added that the donation of the PPE and other hygiene items is to support the Department of Social Welfare and other frontline workers who provide essential services to children and families to protect vulnerable children during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Madam Anne- Claire Dufay noted that the health, safety and wellbeing of all staff engaged in the COVID-19 response is a shared responsibility and as such UNICEF supports efforts to strengthen social services across all sectors.
She reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to promoting family-based care, ensuring the safety of children and the promotion of reunification of children.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison on behalf of the Ministry and all children in Ghana thanked UNICEF-Ghana for their donation.
Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison stressed that, the Ministry will continue to maintain a cordial relationship with UNICEF to cater for vulnerable children in the country.
To support the efforts of the Departments of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, UNICEF has provided the Department with the following items:
• 1625 packets of masks – 81,250 masks
• 1625 packets of gloves – 162,500 gloves
• 1625 bottles of hand sanitizer – 812.5 litres
• 150 pieces contact digital thermometers
• 150 Veronica buckets with stands (35 of which are in Tamale) • 2,000 gallons of liquid soap • 10,000 rolls of hand tissue and 500 gallons of bleach.
