DEMO ON THE PREPARATION OF HOMEMADE HAND SANITIZERS AT MoGCSP

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection on 18th March, 2020 demonstrated the preparation of homemade hand sanitizers at the forecourt of the Ministry to some selected media houses.
The purpose of the practical demonstration was to educate the general public on the preparation of homemade hand sanitizers and the need to adhere to the required precautionary measures to help combat the Corona Virus also known as COVID-19 pandemic.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison together with her Chief Director, Dr. Afisah Zakariah and the CEO of Vicesh Enterprise, Mrs. Victoria Eshun demonstrated the required procedures and materials used in the preparation of the homemade hand sanitizers.
Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison said as part of government’s efforts to help combat the disease the Ministry will supply free homemade sanitizers to Ministries.
She advised parents to learn these simple steps so they can easily prepare them at home for their kids to save cost.
The Minister advised parents to add a little bit of essential oil to differentiate the hand sanitizers from drinking water.
Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison cautioned the general public to desist from abusing alcohol in persuant to prevent the contraction of the virus.
She pleaded with traders to immediately stop over pricing hand sanitizers to enable the poor and vulnerable to also purchase them. Adding that this is not the period to exploit others at the expense of the deadly disease but they should demonstrate some love towards each other.during this trying moment.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection has urged all to consume lots of fruits which will help build up their immune system and help the body to resist other deadly diseases.
Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison stated that one can dissolve salt, carbolic soap and ‘alata samina’ in clean water to frequently wash their hands as a form of prevention.
She added that the bark of nim trees and camphor can be boiled and the vapour inhaled whilst covering yourself with a blanket to protect one’s self against some other deadly diseases.
In conclusion the Minister stressed on the need for all media houses to allocate some airtime to educate the general public on the precautionary measures to fight the disease
Some of the main materials used in the preparation of the homemade sanitizers were ethanol, glycerine, water (without chlorine) and essential oils (optional).
Mrs. Victoria Eshun mentioned that water with chlorine content like pipe borne water will fight against the alcohol content and will therefore not yield the needed results. Adding that it is advisable to use bottled water or satchet water in the preparation of the homemade sanitizers.
Measurements used in the demonstration of the homemade hand sanitizers:
1. Alcohol / Ethanol – 7.5 litres
2. Water – 2.5 litres
3. Glycerine – 500 ml
The 7.5 litres alcohol was mixed with 2.5 litres water and the 500ml glycerine was added later amidst stirring. The colour and essential oils can be added if required (optional)
