In a significant move to enhance the preparedness and responsiveness of Ghana’s social protection systems, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP), with support from Development Partners, has inaugurated two crucial Technical Working Committees.
These committees are tasked with developing a comprehensive National Social Protection Shock Response Strategy and assessing the status of Social Security and Insurance for Informal Sector Operators towards inclusive shock response.
Over the years, the MoGCSP has conducted extensive studies that provide critical evidence to enhance the resilience of social protection systems against various shocks.
Building on this foundation, the newly inaugurated Technical Working Committee for the shock response strategy is expected to design a framework that will ensure a timely and well-coordinated response to protect vulnerable Ghanaians from the impacts of shocks.
This committee will engage in a series of technical working sessions to support the strategy’s design, reflecting the collaborative efforts of government experts, CSOs, media, and development partners.
In parallel, the Technical Working Committee for scoping the status of Social Security and Insurance for Informal Sector Operators will focus on expanding social protection systems to cover informal sector operators.
The Government of Ghana, through MoGCSP, is already implementing a National Social Protection Policy aimed at increasing access to social security and social insurance for all Ghanaians. The new committee’s role will be to provide essential input and oversight for an impending study that seeks to cushion informal sector operators against various shocks and risks.
Inaugurating both committees on July 30, 2024, the Chief Director of MoGCSP, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, emphasized the importance of these initiatives. She stated, “The work of these Technical Working Committees is essential in developing strategies that will enhance the resilience of our social protection systems, particularly for the most vulnerable in our society. With the collaborative efforts of our technical experts, partners, and stakeholders, I am confident that we will establish robust frameworks to respond effectively to shocks and ensure the well-being of all Ghanaians.”
The committees, composed of technical experts from various sectors, will be chaired by the Chief Director underscoring the ministry’s commitment to building a resilient social protection system that leaves no one behind.
