FIVE DAY CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING PROGRAM ON SOCIAL PROTECTION

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in its 2020/2021 capacity building plan identified a number of training needs for its staff and target groups under the Ghana Employment and Social Protection (GESP) Programme.

One of such key training needs/ gaps identified is in the area of Social Protection.

It is for this reason that the European Union (EU) through the GESP Programme is supporting MoGCSP with its training and coordination activities in collaboration with the Office of the Head of Local Governments Service (OHLGS)

The 5-Day customized certificate course on social protection is intended to help participants deepen their understanding of gender, vulnerability and social protection issues as well as analyse, reflect and propose innovative strategies to address emerging challenges.

Participants who were drawn from the Directorates, Secretariats, Departments and Units of MoGCSP, MLGDRD, MELR and MOF will be taken through Social Policy Design and Planning, Understanding the Policy Framework for Social Protection in Ghana, Reforms and Innovations to Strengthen Social Protection Programme Delivery amongst others.

The training program has the following as its objectives:

• Deepen participants understanding of the rationale for social protection and the related concepts of poverty, gender and vulnerability.
• lncrease institutional capacity and knowledge base to better design, manage and monitor social protection systems.
• Analyse, reflect and propose innovative social protection strategies and policies.
• Build networks and mutually share experiences for enhancing their personal and professional development.

Addressing the participants on behalf of the Sector Minister and the Chief Director, the Project Coordinator of GESP, Madam Abena Annobea Asare who also doubles as the Head of the Human Trafficking Secretariat stressed that capacity development of staff must be a priority as this will boost staff knowledge and productivity.

She urged them to make the most of the opportunity in order to gain the expected knowledge on social protection issues.

The Director of the Institute of Local Government Studies, Dr. Nicholas Awortwi underscored the importance of capacity development for deepening understanding on social protection issues.

He tasked participants to use the knowledge they will acquire to impact the society.

Mr. Nariel Quayson on behalf of the Head and Chief Director of the OHLGS admonished participants to fully take advantage of the program to be agents of change in our society. The TAT team and the PE officers also pledged their support to ensure a successful program implementation as the project period ends.

The training programme which started on Monday, 4th October, will end on Friday, 8th October, 2021.

The training is being funded by the European Union under the Ghana Employment and Social Protection Programme.
