WORKING VISIT BY FATHER CAMPBELL

Father Andrew Campbell, founder of the Lepers Aid Committee and caretaker of the Weija Leprosarium, has undertaken a working visit to the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to explore areas of collaboration in supporting vulnerable groups.
For decades, the Lepers Aid Committee has championed the welfare of persons affected by leprosy and other marginalized groups, providing shelter, healthcare, rehabilitation, and social reintegration support.
Father Campbell’s work aligns closely with the Ministry’s mandate to promote social inclusion, protect the rights of the vulnerable, and enhance their quality of life.
During the meeting, Father Campbell called for stronger collaboration to ensure persons with disabilities receive adequate care. He further advocated for the expansion of LEAP benefits to cover other eligible inmates, thereby extending social protection to a wider group of marginalized individuals.
The discussion also touched on the plight of street children, an issue close to the Minister’s heart.
The Honorable Minister, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, highlighted ongoing collaborations with relevant agencies to address the root causes and provide long-term solutions.
On the LEAP expansion request, the Minister assured that pragmatic steps would be taken to ensure all eligible persons are enrolled in the programme.
She added that the recent passage of the Social Protection Bill by Parliament, now awaiting Presidential assent would further strengthen the legal framework to protect vulnerable groups and provide a more sustainable basis for programmes like LEAP.
