VICE PRESIDENT LAUNCHES 2025 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

On Wednesday, 1st October 2025,Her Excellency Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, officially launched the ‘2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ at the forecourt of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP).

Held under the theme “Catch it Early; Treat it Right; Survive it,” the event sought to raise public awareness on breast cancer prevention and early detection, while drawing attention to the rights and well-being of women and older persons.

The launch, which coincided with the commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons, featured free breast cancer screening for staff and the general public, as well as National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration for the elderly.

In her keynote address, the Vice President underscored the urgent need for early detection and proper treatment in tackling breast cancer. She reminded the public that although the disease affects both men and women, it continues to pose one of the greatest health challenges for women, with ripple effects on families and communities.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang urged Ghanaians to embrace regular screening and self-examination as lifesaving practices, stressing that this year’s theme should be taken as a collective call to action. She also called for an end to the stigma surrounding breast cancer, emphasizing that illness is never a choice and that patients deserve empathy, support, and dignity.

On the International Day of Older Persons, the Vice President paid glowing tribute to the elderly for their immense contributions to national development. She advocated greater respect, care, and protection for older persons, noting that their wisdom and experiences remain invaluable to building a stronger, more united Ghana.

As part of the launch, the Vice President held bilateral discussions with the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, before joining an interactive session with the Ministry’s management team.

The Minister delivered a presentation highlighting the Ministry’s mandate, mission, vision, and achievements, including the passage of the Social Protection Act, Cabinet approval of the Revised Gender Policy, and the indexation of the LEAP cash grant among others.

Commending the Minister and her team, the Vice President reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting the Ministry’s mandate and encouraged management and staff to sustain their dedication to delivering on their critical responsibilities.

The ceremony was climaxed with an official unveiling to signify the launch of the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons.
