The Human Trafficking Secretariat (HTS) under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in collaboration with Verité has commenced a 3-day training ( from 1st to 3rd June, 2022) on forced labour for some staff of the Ministry.
The training forms part of the on-going partnership between Verité and the HTS under the Forced Labour Indicators Project (FLIP)
Verité is an independent, non-profit and civil society organization that works globally with governments, multi-national corporations, and labour advocates on mitigating risk to workers and ensuring that people work under safe, fair and legal conditions.
The essence of the training is to build the capacity of staff on forced labour indicators as well as its approach.
It is also to help them understand, identify and address forced labour risk in their field of work.
Addressing participants at the opening session, the Head of the Human Trafficking Secretariat, Madam Abena Annobea on behalf of the Ministry said human trafficking and forced labour is one of the biggest human rights challenges since it attacks the most vulnerable and strips them of their freedom and humanity.
She admonished participants to pay attention and take the training serious as this will help them to understand the basic concepts of forced labour and human trafficking.
Ms. Josephine Dadzie, Verité Project Director indicated that they will work collaboratively with the government of Ghana to improve systems for identifying and addressing forced labor and labor trafficking using the forced labor indicators approach developed by the International Labor Organization.
The project according to her will support the existing infrastructure already in place to monitor issues of child labor and it’s associated issues.
As part of the first day’s session, participants were trained on the following topics:
- Forced Labour definition and International Standards.
- Human Trafficking definition and International Standards.
- Understanding concepts related to forced labour and human trafficking.
