In a vibrant step towards promoting gender equality and inclusive community development, the Department of Gender under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has successfully organised a two-day Training of Trainers (
) workshop on Gender Action Learning System (GALS) methodology.
Held from Tuesday 27th to Wedneday 28th May 2025, in the Eastern Region, the capacity-building aimed to introduce the officers to the principles of the GALS methodology for effective integration into community-level activities to promote Gender Equality, as well as improve the livelihood and nutrition of the vulnerable groups.
Speaking at the training on behalf of the Director for the Department of Gender, Madam Faustina Acheampong, the Deputy Director Madam Vera Karikari highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to integrating gender-responsive tools in national development.
She charged the officers to bring their knowledge and expertise on board to achieve the set goals effectively.
The Gender Action Learning System (GALS) is a community-led empowerment methodology developed to address gender inequalities through visual tools that enable individual and collective planning, analysis, and action.
It emphasizes inclusiveness, participation, and transformation of gender relations within households, communities, and institutions.
Facilitators, Madam Sabia kpekata and Mr James Twene, led participants through interactive sessions on the foundational concepts of Gender equality, power dynamics, and social norms. Using diagram-based tools such as the Vision Road Journey, Gender Balance Tree, Soul Mate Theory, Gender Justice Diamond, among others.
The officers explored how GALS can empower women and men to collaboratively set life goals and overcome social and economic barriers.
The training session was structured around participatory learning exercises and reflection sessions, which aimed at equipping the officers with hands-on experience in delivering GALS at the community level.
Participants left with a deeper appreciation for the methodology’s transformative potential and were better prepared to facilitate community sessions.
Funded by the World Food Programme, the workshop on GALS is a significant step toward promoting gender-transformative programming in Ghana.
