The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), through its Department of Gender, has organised a one-day sensitization workshop on the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121) to deepen stakeholders’ understanding and promote effective implementation of the law.

The event supported by UNFPA Ghana was held on Wednesday, 6th August 2025.

Delivering the welcome address, the Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Faustina Acheampong, underscored the Ministry’s commitment to promoting gender equality, equity and women’s empowerment through full implementation of the Act.

She noted that the workshop sought to increase awareness of the provisions of the law, clarify the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders as mandated, and identify strategies for its effective enforcement. “The full realisation of this Act will position Ghana as a regional leader in gender equality, equity and governance,” she stated.

Passed by Parliament on 30 July 2024, the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act aims to ensure the progressive representation of women in key decision-making positions across both the public and private sectors. The law targets the attainment of 30 per cent women representation in decision-making from 2024 to 2026, 35 per cent from 2027 to 2028, and 50 per cent by 2034.

She noted that the Ministry officially unveiled the Act on 31 July 2025 as part of activities marking African Women’s Day.

Outlining progress towards implementation, the Director revealed that a Gender Equity Committee had been constituted to guide and oversee the enforcement of the Act’s key provisions.

Madam Acheampong stressed that successful implementation and monitoring of the Act required a collective national effort involving government, development partners, MDAs, MMDAs, civil society, academia, traditional leaders, researchers and the media. “The implementation and monitoring of the Act does not solely rest on government but requires collaboration among all stakeholders to promote a more inclusive and equitable society,” she emphasised.

The workshop featured presentations on the Act, plenary and group sessions to develop strategies for its implementation and monitoring, as well as open discussions on the way forward.

In closing, Madam Acheampong expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its continued technical and financial support and commended all stakeholders for their active participation.
