The Convener for Women in Peace and Security (WPS) in Ghana, Mrs. Theodora Williams-Anti, has led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to discuss ongoing efforts and strategic collaboration towards the advancement of the Women, Peace and Security agenda in Ghana.

Women in Peace and Security Ghana operates under the broader umbrella of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), which plays a pivotal role in promoting conflict prevention, democratic governance, and gender-inclusive peacebuilding across the subregion.

During the meeting, Mrs. Williams-Anti commended the Ministry for its contribution to the implementation of Ghana’s National Action Plan on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (GHANAP II).

She emphasized the need to build on the gains made so far, noting that the 25th anniversary of UNSCR 1325, adopted in 2000 and slated for October this year, presents a timely opportunity for Ghana to reflect on its progress and leadership in advancing peace and security, especially for women.

On her part, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

She stated: “Peace is an event; it is an event that started somewhere, and maintaining it is very crucial to the survival of all.”

She assured the delegation that the Ministry would work with key stakeholders to ensure the safety and inclusion of women and children affected by conflict.

The Minister further pledged the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with Women in Peace and Security Ghana in commemorating the 25th anniversary of UNSCR 1325 at the national level, to reflect on lessons learned and enhance future implementation.

In line with the Government of Ghana’s ongoing commitment to gender equality and inclusive peace, the Ministry continues to champion the implementation of GHANAP II (2020–2025), supporting women’s active participation in peacebuilding, protection of rights, and post-conflict recovery.

Both parties held extensive discussions on the impact of conflict on women and children and the need to strengthen protection mechanisms in conflict-prone areas.

Also present at the meeting were the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, and the Head of the Social Protection Directorate, Madam Franca Atuluk.
