The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has engaged with the leadership of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) to deliberate on critical issues affecting persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana.
The meeting – which forms part of efforts to promote disability-inclusive social protection – provided a space for mutual reflection on the state of disability support systems and the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to ensure equity, inclusion, and institutional responsiveness.
Among key issues discussed were: the full implementation of the Disability Act, the need to expand access to the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme for persons with disabilities, and the clarification of institutional mandates to enforce disability compliance across social policies and public services.
The conversation also addressed demands for sustainable caregiver support, the establishment of safe residential care homes for persons with severe disabilities, and increased attention to the unique needs of elderly persons with disabilities, especially those over 60 years.
Children with disabilities and special needs were a central focus of the dialogue, with shared concerns over the gaps in inclusive education, early intervention, and the creation of disability-friendly environments to support their development and participation.
The Minister underscored the Ministry’s commitment to institutional coordination, accountability, and inclusive programme delivery.
Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey reiterated that building a society where no child, caregiver, or person with disability is left behind remains a key priority within Ghana’s social protection framework.
