32ND MEETING OF STATES PARTIES TO THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON THE LAW OF THE SEA

At a side event held at the 32nd Meeting of States Parties to the United States Convention on the Law of the Sea from 13th – 18th June, 2022 at the UN Headquarters, the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu met with the Regional Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for West and Central Africa, Ms. Marie Pierre Poirier.
During their interaction, Hon. Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu commended UNICEF for its programmes and activities in support of government’s effort to improve the living conditions of Ghanaian children.
She mentioned that the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is undertaking a number of initiatives, which are geared towards ensuring the protection of children, the respect and protection of human rights, including the rights of women and girls. Adding that, the government of Ghana is committed to ensuring a robust child protection capacity to monitor and report violations against children.
Delivering her statement on behalf of Ghana to States Parties to the United States Convention on the Law of the Sea, Hon. Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu said the adoption and entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea provides an opportune moment to reflect on the contributions of the Convention to the management and use of the ocean and its resources.
She added that Ghana reaffirms her unwavering support for the Convention as it uniquely sets the parameters for the actions of States in the Area and seeks to protect and preserve the marine environment.
“Since becoming a State party to the Convention on 7th June, 1983, Ghana has fully supported its implementation through the work of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, the International Seabed Authority and the International Tribunal on the law of the sea”. she concluded.
