The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection through the Department of Children and in collaboration with UNICEF, Plan Ghana, World Vision International UNHCR, Star Ghana, Action Aid, International Needs and other Partners have held the National Children’s Day at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre on Thursday 29th August, 2019 with focus on 40 years of the establishment of the government machinery, its achievement, challenges and way forward.

The theme for the celebration is “40 Years of Child Right’s Promotion and Protection; charting the way forward”. The National Children’s Day is to bring attention to the status of children by identifying the key achievements and challenges of that year in a way forward to the coming year.

The National Children’s Day is celebrated to mark the establishment of the Government machinery for children. The celebration focuses on;

  • Taking stock of achievements, challenges and way forward for the promotion of child rights machinery in Ghana
  • Raising awareness on the status of the Ghanaian Child and also soliciting support from stakeholders to develop programmes and activities that would enhance the situation of children in the country.
  • Presenting an opportunity to focus on the work of all actors committed to the rights of children.
  • Providing an occasion for Governments, Institutions and Communities to renew their on-going commitments towards improving the challenges of marginalized and particularly vulnerable children by organizing activities aimed at including these children.

The celebration is expected to be nationwide with awareness creation at the region, district and local levels. It will be climaxed with a National Dialogue with the theme with children taking active role in panel discussions to input into the next steps for their protection and development.
